Students at eligible Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) can now apply to two MSI scholarships, the MSI STEM Pathways Scholarship and the MSI STEM Bridge Scholarship. Applications are being accepted until Monday, October 16, 2023.
Future STEM teachers can apply to North Carolina Space Grant’s STEM Pre-Service Teacher Education Scholarship now until Monday, October 16, 2023.

North Carolina Space Grant proudly announces its 2023-24 graduate research fellows. Fourteen graduate students will conduct science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) research to benefit NASA, commercial space or the International Space Station. For example, their projects include investigating star formation, advancing space vehicles, and making bio-based building materials.

Catalyst, a national award winning program of The Science House at NC State University, offers STEM opportunities for high school students with disabilities. Starting in high school, students gain experience for a future in STEM through educational opportunities, field trips, internships and more. Recently, Catalyst students embarked on a field trip to the NASA Johnson Space Center where they went on behind the scenes tours with NASA professionals. In addition, students across the state were immersed in all-things STEM at the Reach for the Stars! Be a Star! STEM Fair in April.

Teams from across the state gathered at Catawba Valley Community College in late March to compete in the 2023 North Carolina Space Grant Community College High-Altitude Ballooning Challenge (HABC). Teams received various awards ranging from Highest Altitude to Best Photo. Wake Technical Community College’s high-altitude ballooning team won the Best Overall Team award.

In April, the North Carolina Science Festival hosted the 11th annual Statewide Star Party, an opportunity to stargaze, celebrate and learn about the night sky. Approximately 8,500 people participated in these public skywatching events at 35 different locations from the mountains to the sea.
